We need to exhibit a united voice in so many more important aspects of our communal affairs. Challenges such as our priorities in America, political goals, communal priorities, financial priorities, and so on. But we lack the structure, discipline, and leadership to make this happen. We lack the will because each masjid is an island, happily drifting in any direction the “leader” chooses. It is therefore appropriate to have the Eid drama come as a warning sign that reminds everyone that we really need to come together.

from my observation with the college unit, the division comes from people/community's flipflopping in choosing an authority. Some people will be fine with the local masjid, other people will seek out what is said abroad, others give credence to a national organization. Then when each organization declares Eid on different days, people on the whole are just confused on who to follow.
so what it really comes down to, is that the local authorities need to emphasize the "etiquette of decision making"
something should be said telling the Muslims to explicitly make the intention to follow the decisions of a masjid of their choosing at the BEGINNING of Ramadan.
Then they should follow through with the decision of that masjid on when Eid is.
Since many organizations declared the start of Ramadan on the same day there wasn't much cleavage; however when it came to EID people were torn as to following ISB or their local masjid, like Lowell.
More attention needs to be paid at this spectrum of the problem; the arguments for the superiority of moon sighting or calculations both seem right to me when explained intelligently. I think both sides have articulated their own positions well enough for people to decide which is better for them; now the next step is to educate people on the merits of "early decision making/long term planning" all under the principle of "unity of the community"
